How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera

A practical guide for Perth business owners

If the idea of speaking on camera makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, you’re not alone.

Even confident business owners can feel nervous once the camera starts rolling. The good news? Feeling natural on camera isn’t about being a “natural performer” — it’s about being prepared, supported, and knowing you’re not under pressure.

Here’s how to set yourself up for a relaxed, confident shoot.

1. Be prepared (even if you usually wing it)

Even if you’re someone who normally speaks off the cuff, I always recommend prepping something in advance.

Once the camera is on, nerves can kick in and your mind can go blank — totally normal. Having a loose script or dot points gives you something to fall back on and instantly removes pressure.

If you’re filming for Meta ads, it’s especially helpful to prepare:

  • A few versions of your opener

  • One or two closers or calls to action

If you need help shaping your script, this is something I’m more than happy to help with. We’ll keep it natural, not salesy.

2. Practice your script before shoot day

Once you’ve got your script or talking points, practice it out loud.

I recommend:

  • Running through it daily for 2–3 days before the shoot

  • Practising in front of a mirror or on your phone

  • Getting comfortable with the flow, not memorising word-for-word

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s familiarity. The more familiar it feels, the more relaxed you’ll be on the day.

3. Bring a couple of outfit options

You don’t need a full wardrobe change — even:

  • A second shirt

  • A jacket or layer

can make a big difference.

This helps in case:

  • The wind picks up

  • The lighting changes

  • One option doesn’t sit quite right on camera

Small changes can completely shift how confident you feel.

4. Ask for advice on what to wear

Speakng of outfits…if you’re unsure, ask.

Based on:

  • The shoot location

  • Background colours

  • Time of day

  • Weather conditions (especially wind)

I can help guide you on what will work best on camera and make sure you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing.

5. Breathe — we’re in no rush

Before every take, take a breath.

There’s no pressure to get everything perfect in one go. We can:

  • Stop and reset

  • Do multiple takes

  • Clip and edit later

If you mess up a line, that’s completely fine. We’ll just go again. The best takes usually come once you’ve relaxed into it.

My job is to make this easy

I genuinely love helping people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Almost every client starts a little nervous — and almost every client ends the shoot saying they actually had fun.

If you’re ready to film a piece-to-camera video (where you speak directly to the camera), this approach is perfect for:

  • Website videos

  • Social media content

  • Meta ads

  • Brand storytelling
